How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

In this video Charles the Humble Mechanic shows how to replace the G28 engine speed sensor. The sensor is situated on the edge of the transmission above the flywheel ring gear. It sends a message to the ECU through an uncolored wire T55/49, then to the tachometer located on the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The grey wire is located at the edges of the transmission, directly above the flywheel ring. The sensor transmits a signal via the grey wire to pin T55/49. The ECU utilizes this information to control fuel and boost. It also sends a signal to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor serves as a reference for comparing with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu needs to know when the crankshaft is TDC and the location of the camshaft so it can start spark and injectors accordingly.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw the P00160 error, which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are not in sync and possibly indicating chain stretch or a jumped link on the upper chain of timing. However, the code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It is a little tricky to test as there are several pins on the connector, and each one has different functions. The best method for doing this is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. It should read approximately 1000 ohms when it is at full operation. Look for evidence of coolant or oil in the connector bay if there are problems with this part.

2. Injectors

Yesterday accelerating full speed from highway paytoll, I experienced an abrupt drop in power like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing anymore. I pulled out the spark plugs this morning, 3 were soaked in gasoline, and the fourth was unclean. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole, and when I start the engine with no sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The 4th one remains shut. I inspected the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55, 30/55 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I assume that the problem is elsewhere.

I also tried to reset the PID but without success. The car will start when the G28 is disconnected, but it is running fine with the G28 plugged in. However the intermittent misfire issue persists at higher RPM. The temperature sensor for coolant (G62) shows the wrong temperature of -49c even when i unplug it. Also, i noticed that the oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

I don't know what to do. I believe that I've eliminated everything else. I'm worried that i might have missed something. If anyone has any ideas please let me know! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump in the g28 receives a signal from the RPM sensor.
